I thought it would be fun to ask the ever so talented Joanne Sharpe a couple of questions about her art and lettering …
Interview with Joanne Sharpe
When did you start being interested in lettering?
I’ve done hand lettering with my art since high school, when i kept piles of art journals recording quotes with markers.
Did you have good handwriting in school?
Actually, yes, pretty decent! As i got older, my thoughts began to overrun with ideas and i could never write fast enough. It became a little messy and scattered at times.
When given the choice do you print or use cursive?
I always, always combine the two in my writing. I might start in cursive, then add printed letters as the words are formed.
If you could use one writing implement which one would you choose?
A black, fine tip, permanent, pigment pen like a Pitt or Micron.
What is your favorite medium to work with?
Without a doubt watercolor and pen and ink.
Do you keep a journal or a sketchbook and if so what kind?
It’s probably no surprise that i keep several journals for my many creative moods. My favorite is the Strathmore Visual journals, as they are reasonably priced and i never have any fear about “wrecking” the journal with play and experimenting.
